HELP TO THE ORPHANS AND FORGOTTEN CHILDREN IN CAMBODIA

  Cambodian overview

Cambodia is a country in South East Asia with a population of 15 million Khmers. The capital city is Phnom Penh. The Khmer Empire, predominantly Hindu and Buddhist, once extended over virtually all of the Indo China peninsular from the XIth to the XIVth century. Cambodia's neighbours are Thailand to the West and North West, Laos to the north east, and Vietnam to the east and south east.

The citizens of Cambodia are known as Cambodians or Khmers. The majority of Cambodians are Theravada Buddhists, but there are also a community of Cham Muslims , as well as moutain tribes and a christian community.

The main geographical features are the Mekong (Tonlé Thom in khmer) and Tonlé Sap rivers. Much of the country is low lying and is at or below the level of the rivers. During the rainy season the mekong river's current reverses and it flows into the Tonlé Sap, substancially increasing the surface area of the lake.

The economy is centered around agriculture, as well as clothing manufacture and tourism (1.7 million visitors in 2006). Oil and Gas have also been discovered.

In 2008 the temples at Preah Vihear on the boder with Thailand were internationally  recognised as belonging to Cambodia.
